JR’s INSIDE OUT Puts the Expressions of Shanghai on Display
The internationally renowned artist JR and his INSIDE OUT global art project have arrived at Shanghai Xintiandi. Beginning in 2011, he has traveled to more than 80 countries worldwide with this project, shooting free portraits for more than 120,000 people.
The theme of this INSIDE OUT project is “A World of Ten Thousand Images.” JR shot black and white pointillize portrait photos of ordinary citizens for free, and posted the photos on the public walls of the north and south block of Xintiandi in an effort to find the expression and attitude which best represents the city of Shanghai. Hundreds of people had already lined up to have their pictures taken during the first shooting phase, and the second shooting
phase was held from May 22 to May 29 at Shanghai Xintiandi. “A World of Ten Thousand Images” invited ordinary people to use their own facial expressions to show the whole world the modern face of Shanghai, and has become one of the city’s largest outdoor public art activities in recent years.
Through the INSIDE OUT Shanghai project, Shanghai Xintiandi promotes artistic creation and expression, encouraging and guiding more and more people to “discover” themselves and “show” themselves to the world.
